tori spelling poor

When I was a kid, Tori Spelling being obscenely rich was like one of the things kids knew about celebrities, because in the pre-internet age, it was a favorite tidbit for teen mags — so a “poor” Tori Spelling seems so weird.

In the 90s, Tori Spelling was like everyone’s first introduction to nepotism. In the same articles where teenybopper rags dished on her mansion with a room specifically for wrapping gifts (for some reason it was this, and not like, an indoor water slide or anything, that was a barometer for wealth) and the fact that she’d come into her gig as Donna on Beverly Hills, 90210 through dad Aaron Spelling, who like, owned Beverly Hills or something.

Spelling stayed relatively famous long after some of her 90210 co-stars — while no one remembers what happened to that chick who played Brenda, Tori at least got some reality shows out of her youthful stardom.

Jason Priestley? Luke Perry? Where did they go? We don’t know, but we do know Spelling married and had a few kids, and ran an inn or something similar on reality TV. Whatever she was up to, it was in front of a camera.

However, Spelling’s Scrooge McDuck days of yore are long past, she says, and the star even admits that while she grew up in the lap of luxury, some fairly standard medical services are out of the family’s reach right now. Even more interesting? Tori seems totally cool with it!

You may recall that during her last pregnancy, Tori suffered some pretty serious complications, and was in the hospital for almost two months. Time away from work and under medical care were costly — and Spelling admits that the family’s bottom line was affected a lot.

After she and hubby Dean McDermott’s reality program Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood was axed, Spelling admits they skipped a planned vasectomy for him because their business manager advised against it.

But what is interesting too is that Tori doesn’t carry a touch of bitterness or entitlement when she laments not only a newly stripped down budget, but a reported lack of access to her inheritance from her late dad Aaron. Spelling is humble and honest, and even says she herself was a bit too liberal with cash in until recently.

She begins:

“I grew up rich beyond anyone’s dreams. I never knew anything else. Even when I try to embrace a simpler lifestyle I can’t seem to let go of my expensive tastes… And then there’s my shopping problem. I’ve bought ridiculous amounts of stuff for the kids, clothing, toys, crafts.”

Stop making us let go of 22-year-old seething resentment by being cool and relatable, Tori Spelling! She adds, quite placidly:

“We’re in the entertainment business, and things change year to year… We don’t have a series on the air right now, so we have to be more restrictive of what we can spend, just like anyone who doesn’t currently have a steady job.”

We’re currently torn between feeling impressed by Spelling’s candor and feeling sad that the richest girl of the 90s has to stop shopping at Gucci. It really is a different world.

Tori says she’s learning to spend less, and says:

B”I haven’t bought a purse in three years, and it’s fine… I look back at that girl who shopped at Gucci in my 20s, and I can’t even relate. I can’t believe I thought it was important.”
